Improving Democracy
It's painfully clear that so many clear and very dangerous problems we face today that aren't addressed are because of monied interests. And if we do not address the thing that can hold more power than the actual politicians voting, we will never be able to be set free from our past mistakes. Because it's clear to many Americans that our democracy is not doing the best it can be. With very popular solutions to the problems, we face not being supported by either of the major parties. I think it's time that new parties get a better chance of hearing out what they need to say.

So what should we do:
-
Make Election Day a state holiday and fight for a national holiday.
-
Protect prepaid vote-by-mail.
-
Make no-fault absentee ballots an option.
-
End gerrymandering by getting rid of federal congressional districts altogether and instead use party proportional voting and ranked-choice voting to get the closest representation to what the voter actually wants each and every 2 years.
-
Increase the number of vote drop-off locations, starting in African-American and poor communities, which were the first victims of coordinated voter suppression efforts.
-
Pilot these new democratic programs to test the efficacy of alternatives to the first-past-the-post system, including RCV (ranked-choice voting), and PPV (party proportional voting). Voters should not be perpetually stuck choosing the lesser of two evils, that is how people lose faith in democracy.
-
Guarantee every Oregonian the absolute right to vote.
-
Require Oregon to hold open primaries. Voters should choose their representation based on whose vision they want, not which party they chose to align with weeks before the election.
-
Lower the voting age to 16. We must de-couple voting and civic participation from "adulthood". Young people deserve a say in their future, they do pay taxes just like any other 18-year-old after all, and our nation was founded on fighting against the notion of taxation without representation.
-
Automatically register every Oregon to vote when they turn 15 or move here.
-
Out of the past 9 presidential elections, Republicans have won a total of 12 years in office while Democrats got a total of 24 years even though Democrats won the popular vote in 8 of the 9 past elections. That is inherently undemocratic in every shape and form. If any other nation did this we would be invading them for their natural resources because of their supposed "anti-democratic behavior." Thus we need to pressure the federal government to end the Electoral College via a congressional resolution and make presidential elections actually democratic.
-
Support other state efforts to award Electoral College votes to the national popular vote winner.
